  김종영미술관은 2002년 개관이래 조각전문 미술관으로 다양한 기획전을 개최하였다. 최근 몇 년 사이 미술계에서는 ‘탈 장르화’가 주된 현상으로 대두되었다. 그 결과 과거 ‘회화와 조각’은 ‘평면과 입체’로 대체되는 추세이다. 이런 상황에서 김종영미술관은 지금 한국 조각예술의 상황을 살펴보고자 2007년 ‘흙, 그 물질적 상상력’전을 시작으로, 2014년‘ 멘탈 웍스-투데이(Metal Works-Today)’전을 개최하였다. 그리고 올해는 ‘스톤 웍스-투데이(Stone Works-Today)’전을 개최한다.

 한국 석조각계의 1세대 작가라 할 수 있는 강태성, 전뢰진으로부터 현재 한국 석조각계에서 가장 활발하게 활동하고 있는 40대 작가까지 망라하여 그들 작품을 한 자리에 모아 전시한다. 석조는 조각 중에서도 가장 노동집약적인 작업이라고 할 수 있다. 또한, 작업에서 발생하는 분진으로 도심에서 작업하는 것은 불가능하다. 이와 같은 석조의 특성으로 인해 점차 돌을 다루는 작가들이 감소하는 추세이다.

 이번 전시는 이렇게 어려운 여건하에서도 묵묵히 돌을 만지고 있는 이 땅의 대표적인 작가들이 거의 다 모인 뜻깊고 보기 드문 전시이다.

  As a museum specializing in sculptures, the KIM Chong-yung Museum has hosted a variety of exhibitions since its opening in 2002. In recent years, “genre destruction” has become a prominent phenomenon in the art world. As a result, ‘paintings and sculptures’ are ncreasingly being replaced with ‘planes and three dimensions’ Under such circumstances, the KIM Chong-yung Museum has held exhibitions that examine the current footsteps of Korean sculpture today, tarting with the 2007 Dirt, the Corporeal Imagination, and continuing to the 2014 exhibition, ‘Metal Works – Today’. This year, this museum holds a new exhibition titled ‘Stone Works – Today’.

  This exhibition features a large spectrum of works, including the works by the first generation rock sculptors, including Tae-seong KANG and Roe-jin JEON, and sculptures by prolific artists in their 40s. Rocks are the most labor-intensive materials used in sculpting. Moreover, it is impossible to sculpt rocks in the city, as the work would generate dust. Due to such characteristics of stone sculptures, the number of artists who dedicate themselves to stone sculpting is declining. 

 This exhibition is a rare and meaningful opportunity where most of the representative works of the artists, who are silently handling stones in this country despite the difficult conditions, are gathered together.
